Cocktail Recipe: Smoked Old Fashioned - The Perfect Ratios?
Enjoyment Gone Up in Smoke: The Perfect Cherry Rye Old Fashioned
Whiskey lovers know that the enjoyment of a drink doesn't begin at the pour, but at the ritual. In our new Smoking Spirit section, we now show you how to elevate your home bar experience to a professional level with the help of a quality whiskey smoker.
The first cocktail recipe we brought you is the king of classics: the Old Fashioned. But not as you've known it so far.
Why cherry wood?
Rye whiskey is famous for its spicy, peppery notes. If we pair this with cherry wood chips using a cocktail smoker, we get a sweetish, fruity counterpoint that rounds off the edges of the drink.
Ingredients:
| Ingredient |
Amount |
| Rye Whiskey |
60ml |
| Angostura Bitters |
2 dashes |
| Maple syrup or sugar syrup |
½ teaspoon |
| Smoking chips |
1 portion of cherry |
Preparation: The 30-30-30 Rule
The secret to the Smoking Spirit experience is precision. Don't rush it, give the flavors time!
-
Stirring (30 sec): Put the whiskey, syrup, and bitters into a mixing glass. Stir without ice for exactly 30 seconds. This "dry stir" ensures that the syrup dissolves perfectly into the whiskey.
-
Chilling (30 sec): Add a generous amount of ice and stir for another 30 seconds. This achieves the perfect temperature and the minimal dilution that opens up the aromas.
-
Smoking (20-30 sec): Strain the drink into a glass filled with a large ice cube. Place the whiskey smoker unit on top, fill it with the cherry wood chips, and light it. Let the smoke rest on top of the drink for 20-30 seconds.
Tip: When you lift the smoker off, the billowing cloud is not only spectacular, but this is also when the essential oils that make the first sip unforgettable are released.
Optional:
Orange peel squeezed in and a cocktail cherry
This cocktail recipe proves that technique and the right tools – like Smoking Spirit accessories – open up an entirely new dimension in bar culture. The cherry smoke doesn't overpower but frames the character of the rye whiskey.
Cheers!
