What is a Smoked Boulevardier?

The smoked Boulevardier is a classic, bourbon or rye whiskey-based, full-bodied cocktail that combines the popular Negroni's sweet-bitter flavor world with whiskey's deep, oaky character and a distinct, magical smokiness. The real wood smoke layered on top of the cocktail is not only visually stunning, but also softens the drink's bitter notes and enriches the first sip with an inimitable, campfire aroma. If you love bold, masculine drinks, and are searching for the perfect smoked Boulevardier recipe, you've come to the right place!

Imagine that moment when, after a long, tiring day, you sit down in your favorite armchair, craft your own premium cocktail, and the whole thing is enveloped in a thick, fragrant cloud of smoke. The sight alone is captivating, and the first sip is guaranteed to transport you to another dimension. Best of all: you no longer need to visit exclusive, expensive cocktail bars for this experience. With a quality whiskey smoker kit, your home bar can transform into a professional speakeasy spot in a matter of moments. Preparing the smoked cocktail recipe at home isn't rocket science, it's simply a matter of the right tools and a bit of attention.

The Perfect Smoked Boulevardier Recipe: Ingredients and Tools

The Boulevardier's history dates back to the 1920s, to Paris, where it was created by an American writer, Erskine Gwynne. He named the drink after his own literary magazine called "The Boulevardier." The genius of the recipe lies in its simplicity: he replaced the classic Negroni's gin with whiskey. The ratios may differ slightly from the traditional 1:1:1, we recommend a slightly more whiskey-forward approach so the wood smoke has something to "hold onto."

Ingredients (for 1 cocktail):

  • 45 ml Bourbon whiskey: A good quality bourbon is the foundation of everything. A great choice can be the classic Jim Beam bourbon whiskey, whose vanilla and oak notes create perfect harmony with the smoke.
  • 30 ml Sweet vermouth: Choose a premium, full-bodied Italian vermouth (for example Carpano Antica Formula or Cocchi di Torino), which gives the drink its velvety, spicy base.
  • 30 ml Campari: The cocktail's iconic, bitter, orange-herbal liqueur, which balances the sweetness of the vermouth.
  • Orange peel: For garnish and the essential oils that add citrus freshness to the drink.
  • Ice cubes: You'll need plenty of quality, clear ice for mixing.

The necessary tools from your home bar:

  • Mixing glass for combining the ingredients.
  • Long-handled bar spoon.
  • Ice strainer.
  • Old Fashioned or Rocks glass for serving.
  • A large, slow-melting ice cube, or if you'd prefer your drink not to become watered down, a premium Gold Whiskey Stone Set, which elegantly chills the cocktail.
  • And of course the most important: a quality whiskey smoker with the wood chips you want to burn. For this cocktail, we recommend oak or cherry wood chips the most.

How to Make It? The Smoked Boulevardier Recipe Step by Step

Cocktail-making is a ritual. Don't rush the steps! Do it properly, and enjoy every second of the process. With smoked cocktails, temperature, dilution, and timing play the biggest role.

  1. Fill a glass mixing glass with plenty of ice. The ice not only chills, but with minimal melting also adds water to the drink, which is essential for opening up the flavors.
  2. Measure and pour onto the ice the 45 ml bourbon whiskey, 30 ml sweet vermouth, and 30 ml Campari using a jigger. Precise measuring is the key to success!
  3. Stir the ingredients with a bar spoon, using smooth, circular motions. Don't shake (in a shaker) this drink! The Boulevardier, just like its gin sibling, should always be stirred. About 20-30 seconds of stirring is enough for the cocktail to chill perfectly and dilute properly.
  4. Strain the finished drink through the ice strainer into a pre-chilled Old Fashioned glass, into which you have previously placed a single large ice cube (or cooling stone).
  5. Smoke the cocktail! Place the whiskey smoker on top of the glass, put a pinch of oak or cherry wood chips into the metal filter. Ignite the chips with the torch lighter, and let the thick, white smoke settle onto the surface of the drink. Leave the smoker on for 10-15 seconds so the smoke properly "settles into" the liquid.
  6. Garnish your masterpiece. Remove the smoker (enjoy the smoke escaping!), cut a coin of orange peel, twist it over the glass so the essential oils spray from the peel onto the surface of the cocktail, then drop it into the glass.

Flavor Profile and the Perfect Wood Chip Pairing

When you make a plain Boulevardier, the first impression is the Campari's powerful, orange bitterness, immediately followed by the vermouth's dark, spicy sweetness and the bourbon's robust, caramel body. However, when you employ the smoker, the drink shows a completely new face.

After smoking, the first thing that hits your nose is a deep, campfire scent. As you sip, the smoky layer softens the Campari's more aggressive edges. The drink becomes enriched with clear "smoky vanilla" notes, and the bourbon's barrel aromas become much more pronounced. The finish is a long, silky "caramel aftertaste," while the orange peel's essential oils smuggle in a kind of "fruity purity" and freshness between the full-bodied sips.

However, what you smoke with does matter. For this drink, oak provides the most classic, hardest masculine character, since bourbon itself is aged in oak barrels. But if you want something more special, cherry wood's mild, sweetish smoke works wonders with the vermouth's fruity spiciness. Exciting Boulevardier Variations

The beauty of mixology is that there are no rules set in stone. Once you've mastered the basic smoked Boulevardier recipe, it's worth experimenting with the base spirits. Here are some proven twists you must try!

Rye Boulevardier

If you swap the bourbon for rye whiskey, the cocktail becomes much drier and spicier. Rye's peppery, sharper notes work great with Campari's bitterness. For this variation, try using apple wood chips for the smoking, which soften the rye's hardness. If you also love the classic gin-based line, don't miss our smoked Negroni recipe!

Smoked Rum Boulevardier

Replace the whiskey with a dark, long-aged Jamaican or Barbadian rum (for example Appleton Estate or Diplomatico). The rum's molasses-y, tropical fruity sweetness gives the drink an astonishing dimension. Spiced up with a bit of walnut smoke, you get a true autumn-winter soul-warming cocktail.
